The essence of a British summer
Ask anyone what annual event represents the quintessential British summer and they are likely to say it’s Wimbledon. That iconic image of eating strawberries and sipping Pimm’s, enjoying the action on the greenest of grass, is famous the world over.
As the Lawn Tennis Championships certainly make their presence felt in Wimbledon in June and July, luckily you don’t need tickets to enjoy the iconic British summer here.
During the championships, outdoor screens are erected outside the grounds so that everyone can watch the action. You can also visit the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, which features a multitude of exhibits and interactive displays about the sport. A highlight is the virtual reality experience that allows you to experience first-hand the thrill of being on Centre Court.
Those in search of a picturesque picnic spot can head to Wimbledon Common. Covering 460 hectares, it’s the perfect place to relax on lush, green grass, while sipping your Pimm’s and gazing out over the lake.
Wimbledon Park is another huge green space with lots of activities on offer. Tennis fans will find courts here, plus volleyball courts, children’s play areas and a sailing lake. Wimbledon Park Watersports Centre also offers kayaking, canoeing and even windsurfing.
If your heart is set on eating strawberries during your visit to this pretty pocket of London, make sure you visit the Wimbledon Farmers’ Market. Every Saturday morning, locals flock to buy organic fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese and preserves. There are also street food stalls so you can pick up a tasty lunch.
With all this, plus its leafy streets, imposing homes, and historic village centre, Wimbledon is just 16 minutes by train from Waterloo station. If this sounds like the perfect backdrop to your language learning experience, why not study with CES London, in the heart of Wimbledon.
