For some of the most spectacular elephant viewing in the world, head to Addo Elephant National Park – the third largest of South Africa’s great national parks.

First established in 1931 to save just 11 elephants from the brink of extinction, today this finely tuned ecosystem has over 600 of them. And after recent expansion, it is now the only park in the world to be home to Africa’s ‘Big Seven’ in their natural habitat: elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, leopard, sperm whale and great white shark.

Amongst a host of other wonderful flora and fauna, Addo also protects the largest colonies of breeding African penguins and Cape gannets in the world. The unique flightless dung beetle is also found almost exclusively in this park, and there are road signs warning visitors that the little recycling machine has right of way!

Addo offers a wide range of activities for visitors, including horse-riding, guided walking, hiking and 4×4 trails. It is not as busy as other parks such as Kruger National Park, and is conveniently located just 42km from Port Elizabeth, where you will find a delightful base for your English language studies.

A warm and welcoming school, Bay Language Institute offers excursions not just to Addo, but also to the other national parks and private game reserves in and around Port Elizabeth. These include Schotia Safaris, Kragga Kamma Game Park, Daniell Cheetah Project, Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, and Cape Recife Nature Reserve
