Newfoundland and Labrador: Wild and wonderful

Newfoundland and Labrador: Wild and wonderful

Despite a human history that traces back around 9,000 years, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is a place to head if you want to feel far, far away from everything.

The newest of Canada’s 10 provinces is also the most easterly part of North America, and with this remote location comes some of the most rugged and awe-inspiring scenery on the planet. With its towering mountains, massive rock faces, deep forests and rivers that run forever, it’s hard to equate Newfoundland and Labrador with anywhere else. Adventurer Mats Andersson has described it as a mix of “Patagonia, Sweden, New Zealand and other countries from all around the world.”

Icebergs are regularly sighted in the ocean, floating south from the Arctic in early spring each year, on a route known as ‘Iceberg Alley’. These spectacular structures are up to ten thousand years old.

The wildlife too is breath-taking. 95 per cent of all the Atlantic puffins in North America breed on the coasts here, making the bird a well-known symbol of the province. And no visit would be complete without a whale-watching trip. Completely confident in these remote waters, the whales come so close to the boat that you can smell them!

As well as these wonderful creatures, you can see caribou, moose, eagles, otters, and cross paths with an abundance of other wildlife.

Newfoundland and Labrador can be a particularly magical place to be immersed as a young student, with the majesty of nature all around, and the endless opportunities for action and adventure that brings. The Newfoundland International Student Education Program (NISEP) connects young international students with grade-appropriate schools across the province, to deliver each young language learner the experience of a lifetime in a safe and supportive environment.
