Ireland, also nicknamed Emerald Island, is a breath-taking country that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re into nature, sports, history or socialising – there’s always something to do or see. If you love films and TV shows, this is an ideal place to be, as there many famous film locations you simply have to visit when you study in Ireland:

Powerscourt Estate

Powerscourt Waterfall, Ireland’s highest Waterfall can be found less than an hour away from Dublin, at the Powerscourt Estate, at the foothills of Wicklow mountains.

This area is a perfect setting for a family or friends’ day out, but it has been also one of many filming locations of the famous TV series The Vikings.

Trim Castle and Dunsoghly Castle

The county of Wicklow also featured in another movie blockbuster – Braveheart. Yes, that’s right, an iconic film about famous Scot William Wallace and his revolt against King Edward I of England, starring Mel Gibson was actually filmed in Ireland. In Wicklow, you may also recognise Trim Castle, which was filmed as York and Dunsoghly Castle which was filmed as the famous Edinburgh Castle. They are both just an hour of driving from the Dublin city – a perfect destination for a full day or even a short afternoon trip.

Curracloe Beach

The small village of Curracloe in Wexford County, in particular the beautiful beach, served as a filming location for not one, but two films! Saving private Ryan and Brooklyn – were both filmed here and also nominated for Oscars in the Best Picture category!

If you study in Ireland in summer, make sure to visit this stunning beach – it’s less than 2 hours drive from Dublin and just over an hour from Bray and it’s perfect for swimming.

Cliffs of Moher

This list of film locations worth visiting in Ireland wouldn’t be complete without one of the most famous – the Cliffs of Moher. This iconic setting can be spotted in the famous Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince film as well as the Princess Bride!

You will most likely find a day trip to this beautiful place in the activity programme of every Irish language school when you learn English in Ireland, but be prepared for a long drive. The most famous coastal cliffs in Ireland are located at the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Clare. A journey from the capital, Dublin takes around 3 hours.

Kilmainham Gael

If you’d prefer a city filming spot, then Kilmainham Gael is the right choice. This former prison is just a 10-minute drive from the city centre and appeared in several major films. The Italian Job, In The Name of The Father and Michael Collins to name just a few.
