European Capital of Culture 2020: Galway
Galway is a city in County Galway in the West of Ireland. But did you know Galway will be the European Capital of Culture in 2020, alongside Rijeka, Croatia?
Every year, the European Union selects one city from its member countries to be the European Capital of Culture. Under this nomination, the city hosts various cultural events throughout the year. In 2020, Galway will have an opportunity to showcase its creativity with a yearlong calendar of cultural events organised across the city, bringing its communities together.
Helen Marriage, the creative director announced the Galway programme and its three main themes of language, landscape and migration: “Galway is the most extraordinary place and next year it’s at the heart of Europe.” But you have a sense when you are there that it is right on the edge of Europe, looking out on the Atlantic, America next stop.
Galway, a city of culture
Galway is known for its artistic creativity, unique culture and vibrancy and is often called the festival capital of Ireland. Throughout the year Galway hosts a range of events including sport, food & drink, and the arts. The Galway International Arts Festival takes place every year in July and features an Irish and International programme of events including music, theatre, dance, street performances and comedy acts.
Every year at the end of September, the Galway International Oyster Festival takes place. This is the most internationally recognised Irish festivals after St Patrick’s Day. Featuring competitors from all over the world, it has been described by the Sunday Times as “one of the 12 greatest shows on earth” and includes top-class entertainment, street parades and some of the best seafood ever.
Whatever type of cultural event you enjoy you will find something to suit your tastes in Galway and what better time to visit than 2020 as Galway lights up as the European Capital of Culture.
