As leaders of technology in education, we are excited to present Future Learning’s latest innovation. Their Computational Thinking Course is now running for the first time this July in Athlone and Sligo, Ireland and offers a fresh style of learning to their youngest students from 7-12 years.

Future Learning is an Eaquals Accredited English language school in Dublin, specialising in the highest quality summer school provision, academic mini stay programmes, and high school placements, for 9-17-year olds. Challenging and updating more traditional learning methods, Future Learning has created a summer language programme that is enhanced throughout by technology.

So, what is Computational Thinking?

In the modern world, we are faced with complex problems and dilemmas throughout our personal and professional lives. The skills needed to work through these are fundamental to our wellbeing and success. Future Learning believes that the earlier young people acquire these skills and build their resilience the more likely they are to be successful in both their personal and professional adult lives. This is where Computational Thinking comes in. Put simply, this is the breaking down of complex problems into manageable parts, in this way tackling problems step by step in a logical sequence. This king of technique for problem-solving is one of the most useful skills a young person can learn.

What will young people do on this course?

Learners will work in teams to problem-solve, step by step. They will create a real-life working electronic product from scratch right through to a working model. This could be anything from working on a circuit board to programming an actual robot. It’s the getting there that matters and a whole team approach to problem-solving. Along the way, there will be fun and the opportunity to work with others in your peer group. Ultimately,  everyone involved will feel a real sense of achievement.

Future Learning started this innovative project in Dublin and are launching it to locals in Athlone and Sligo this July. Next year it will be available to international students in Athlone during summer 2020 and across another 13 centres in Ireland thereafter.

To find out how this new Computational Thinking Course has already inspired some of Future Learning’s students look at the following testimonials
