Learning English Online

If you want to learn English, travel for an English programme overseas after the Covid-19 pandemic, why not start your journey with an online English course?

7 ways to save money/spend less during your course abroad

Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to live an incredible cultural exchange. Besides learning another language, you will be meeting people from all over the world and have the chance to experience a different culture in a different country. But before going to study abroad you must plan your trip, starting with the basic costs for the journey such as accommodation, food, documents, flight costs, transport and leisure expenses.

If you are considering working abroad, don’t forget to make sure that the country you choose will allow you to work when you study. Perhaps check with a local language travel agency. Here are some tips to help you save more/spend less during your English course abroad.

Accommodation

It is very important for students to be around native speakers as it helps with the learning process and to understand cultural perspectives. A host family will provide this and it is also the cheapest accommodation for students abroad. Students residences are affordable too because you have the possibility of sharing the room with others to keep prices lower.

Food

Trying typical food is also a cultural experience but eating in restaurants every day will make you spend more money than you could imagine. An affordable alternative is to look for supermarkets or grocery stores nearby and prepare your own meals at home. Use restaurants for special treats or special occasions!

Transport

Depending on the location of your accommodation and your school you can go by foot or bicycle. If that is not possible you will need to use public transport. Keep in mind that some countries will offer discounts if you buy monthly or weekly tickets.

Cultural tours

You can usually find free entertainment and attractions (ask your school social programme coordinator). Also, depending on the day of the week you decide to visit a specific attraction, discounts offered by museums, theatres, and expositions may be available. It is also important to remember that there are tours and activities offered by your English School (called the social programme) which are often free or very affordable (and a great way to make friends – especially when you first arrive)

Communication

When you are abroad it is very important to keep in touch with your family and friends, luckily our digital world provides us with some great and cheap ways. There are many mobile network operators and internet service providers that offer good deals and discounts for students. It is often better to buy a sim card, just be aware of the prices and ask your new friends at school as they will often have found the best and cheapest options already.

Finding a part-time job

Some countries such as Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia will allow you to work part-time when you study, and besides the salary you will be improving your language skills and fluency.

Choosing the right student bank account

Many companies offer student bank accounts for international students, but not all offers are the same. UniZest has found a great solution for you to manage your own money not only during your study abroad programme in the UK but also before your arrival. Their Aspire Account is designed for international students studying in the UK and it offers many benefits, including cashback rewards at selected retailers.
