5 South African meals to try when you study in Joburg
English Access Gauteng (EAG) is a top language school in Johannesburg, the city known for its young population and long sunny days. Whilst you study at this excellent establishment, why not take the opportunity to sample some delicious South African meals and bites?
Possibly one of the most popular South African food items, Biltong is a cured meat snack that resembles beef jerky in its texture and flavour. High in protein and low in fat, this delicacy is a healthy choice and can be found in most supermarkets and butchers through Johannesburg.
2 Bunny Chow
Bunny Chow is a meal that consists of a crusty loaf of bread with warm and fragrant curry in its centre. Bunny Chow originated in the seaside city of Durban and has since become a popular dish across the whole of South Africa. When it comes to South African meals, they don’t get more comforting than this.
Boerewors are spirals of meat that contain a mixture of beef with lamb, pork or sometimes a mixture of the two. Delicately spiced and succulent, this BBQed sausage is a salty and satisfying treat.
4 Mielie Pap
As one of South Africa’s most traditional foods, you will find Mielie Pap (or ‘Pap) served in many typical eateries around Johannesburg. This maize-meal porridge has a rich history behind it, despite its perceived simplicity. Pap is commonly served alongside meat items and is excellent when paired with the Boerewors that we previously mentioned.
5 Malva Pudding
To finish off your South African meal, why not indulge in a deliciously sweet Malva Pudding? This baked delight is sticky, stodgy and goes perfectly with a generous side of creamy custard or ice cream.
